Short answer: in rooms that get humid or wet, steel storage avoids the swelling that ruins particleboard. Keep it out of standing water, wipe it dry, touch up chips before they rust, and keep the room's humidity in check.
Why particleboard struggles in damp rooms
The Composite Panel Association notes that particleboard and MDF swell measurably in high humidity or water, more than solid wood does, and that the swelling doesn't fully reverse when the panel dries. Laminate and paint protect the faces; once moisture gets in through an edge, a chip or the back, the damage stays.
What steel needs instead
- An intact finish. Touch up chips with matching paint so bare metal isn't exposed.
- A dry base. Use a tray or mat for wet shoes, and don't let the feet stand in water.
- Quick drying. Wipe up spills and condensation. The EPA's advice applies to the whole room: if wet areas are dried within 24 to 48 hours, in most cases mold won't grow.
Bathroom
Put the cabinet outside the splash zone of the shower and sink. Run the bathroom fan or open the window when you shower, as the EPA recommends, and aim to keep indoor humidity below 60% (ideally 30 to 50%). A narrow cabinet like Pantry 72, 27.6 in wide and 13.8 in deep, holds towels and supplies on five adjustable shelves.
Laundry corner
Dryers put out moist air; the EPA says to vent moisture-producing appliances like clothes dryers to the outside where possible. Keep detergent and other liquids on the lowest shelves so a spill doesn't run down over everything else. A wardrobe with a hanging rod, like the Arch Wardrobe 71, gives you somewhere to hang clothes straight from the dryer.
Entryway
Wet boots, umbrellas and dripping coats are hard on particleboard. Keep a boot tray beside a steel cabinet, let wet coats dry before you shut them away, and wipe the base now and then. The Little Arch 71 is 15.75 in deep, so it fits a narrow entry without blocking the way through.
Room by room
| Room | Main risk | Set-up |
|---|---|---|
| Bathroom | Steam and splashes | Outside the splash zone; run the fan; humidity under 60% |
| Laundry corner | Dryer moisture, detergent spills | Vent the dryer outside; liquids on the lowest shelf |
| Entryway | Wet shoes and umbrellas | Boot tray; wipe the base; let wet coats dry first |
Anchor it
